Through community-based activity, Zack Nguyen creates the participatory experience, Hurt to Heart, to offer a safe space for participants and raise consciousness about the healthy process of healing from trauma. Hurt to Heart includes a sculpture made of metal wires, a shredder system, leaves, and meaningful elements to this journey of healing. In this experience, participants are invited to reflect and write about their current traumatic events on a piece of paper, then discard the paper by shredding it through the sculpture. In a community of shredding our reflections on personal trauma, nobody is alone for this healing journey. The shredded paper is transformed into discarded trauma, and will later be used in artworks to promote kindness. The message to take away from this experience is: “Be hurt once to heart more!”.
